2010 Region 2000 Economic Study released this week

Findings show that the regional economy continues to rebalance itself toward high growth industries

May 19, 2010

Virginia's Region 2000 Economic Development Council (EDC) released a regional economic study today that addresses how the local economy is rebalancing itself toward high paying, high growth jobs in the wake of the national downturn.

The 2010 study looked at industry gainers and losers and wage trends, as well as the impact made by the the Region 2000 Partnership to grow the pool of technologically-trained workers for the new economy. The study shows that from 2001-2009, the region gained 8,656 jobs in industry sectors such as healthcare, professional services, accommodation and food service, education, and wholesale trade. This helped to offset job losses in retail, finance, manufacturing and other services during that same timeframe.

Richmond-based Mangum Economic Consulting, LLC conducted the analysis.
