Altavista Downtown Revitalization Project
This multi-phased, multi-faceted project is designed to combine physical improvements, economic incentives, and community collaboration to help Altavista’s central business district reclaim its role as the vibrant, busy center of the surrounding market area. The project began with a CDBG-funded planning process, and elements of the plan include streetscape improvements, storm water drainage upgrades, building and façade rehabilitations, the development of upper story housing for low to moderate income residents, a low-interest loan pool to fund further business development and property improvements, and the development of a comprehensive marketing strategy. $550,000 in VDOT Transportation Enhancement (SAFETEA-LU) funds have already been awarded to streetscape improvements, and the Town is seeking an additional $1 Million in CDBG funds in the spring of 2008. Project partners include: The Town of Altavista, Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development, and Altavista On Track. Project contact: Scott Smith.
