Altavista Mayor appointed as Local Government Council chairman

Altavista Mayor Rudy Burgess has been selected to serve as chairman of Virginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council through June 2010.

The Council consists of mayors and board chairs representing the local governments in Region 2000. City/town managers and county administrators also serve on the Local Government Council.

Celebrating its 40th year of regional service, the Local Government Council provides consulting and grants writing services to cities, counties and towns in Region 2000.  During fiscal year 2010, the Council will manage more than $5 million in grants on behalf of localities, including the $1 Million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) that was awarded to Altavista last year.

Through its Services Authority, the Local Government Council manages the Concord Turnpike Regional Landfill, an operation that processes more than 230,000 tons of solid waste per year.

The Local Government Council was recently awarded a 2009 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations and also received the Robert W. Baker Achievement Award in 2008 Award from the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions for innovation in regional cooperation and planning.

Altavista Town Manager Waverly Coggsdale serves as the Council's treasurer this year.
