Appomattox Station Battlefield Resource & Management Plan
Many people are aware of the fact that Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant in the village of Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. However, few are aware that Lee was forced to surrender at that location on that date because of a battle that took place at nearby Appomattox Depot, or Station, the day before. The purpose of this study, which is largely funded by the American Battlefield Protection Program, is to determine what archeological, architectural, and cultural resources remain of the seat of conflict on April 8, 1865 (much of the area is now overlaid by the Town of Appomattox). The plan will recommend courses of action for stakeholders to take in order to best preserve the landscape and interpret the historical events which took place at the site. Project partners include the American Battlefield Protection Program, Town of Appomattox, National Park Service, and Civil War Preservation Trust. Project contact: Scott Smith.
