AREVA opens new center in Campbell County
Areva opened a new $6.5 million Chemistry and Materials Center in Campbell County. This 8,000 square-foot, two-story
building at the company's Mount Athos Road facility will house several
laboratories and provide a key service to AREVA customers in their
ongoing efforts to reduce corrosion damage to plant components and fuel.

SBDC workshops set to help small business owners
The Region 2000 Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will hold
several workshops in the coming weeks to help small business owners. These are held at the SBDC, 147 Mill Ridge Road, Lynchburg VA 24502.

Sustainability workshop focuses on "greening" local government
More than 50 local government staff members and local and state officials participated in the Region 2000 Sustainable Communities workshop held at the Bower Center for the Arts in Bedford, on August 6 to share best practices on issues facing local governments. Topics discussed were sustainable water supply planning, historic & open space preservation, rural broadband connectivity, and energy-saving initiatives.
The event was sponsored by the
Region 2000 Local Government Council and the Virginia Chapter of the
American Planning Association.

Virtual building tour of CAER facility unveiled at Coffee House event
The Center for Advanced Engineering & Research (CAER) hosted a coffee house event last week to show off site plans and a virtual tour of its upcoming research and education facility scheduled to break ground in October. The event included representatives from Wiley|Wilson, Hurt & Proffitt, Land Planning and Design Associates, Bedford County EDA, and Liberty University, and showcased the new graduate engineering classrooms in CVCC's new Bedford Hall. CMC offers co-op training program
Commercial Metals Corporation (CMC) Rebar Virginia will offer a co-op training program at its Technical Center in Madison Heights beginning in September, in partnership with Central Virginia Community College (CVCC)
The co-op program will allow up to four high school seniors to go through the detailer training program part-time and receive graduation honors, an offer for full- time employment and 12-18 college credits from CVCC upon completion.
CMC's Madison Heights Tech Center opened in October of 2008 and has since added 12 detailers and one estimator to the CMC Rebar Virginia team.

YPCV 535 at Thomas A. Johnson Furniture a successLast Thursday 45 young professionals turned out for the YPCV 535 event at the new Thomas A. Johnson Furniture showroom. Thomas shared his journey of coming to the U.S. from Ghana and cast his long-term vision of starting a woodworking school to train woodcrafters in both Lynchburg and Ghana. Refreshments were provided for the event and Delegate Valentine spoke a few words to the young professionals as well. The next YPCV event will be held August 26, 2009 at FunQuest. More info. |

Summer jobs for 94 area youth pay off
The
Alliance for Families and Children praised the 94 area youth at a picnic at CVCC on Friday for their successful completion of the Youth Summer Employment Program. The six-week summer program was funded through a
$290,000 federal grant from the Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board.
Sixty companies from all four counties in the region participated in the program by offering work assignments to 110 youth, 14-24 years old. Of those, 94 successfully completed the program and some were even offered full time jobs.

Census Workshop to be held in Roanoke on Aug. 26 Those who regularly use Census data are invited to attend
The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) will host a one-day seminar at the Sheraton Roanoke Hotel & Conference Center in Roanoke on August 26, beginning at 9 a.m. The workshop will provide
pertinent information about the 2010 Census.
The information session will be
conducted by U.S. Census Bureau staff for data users and other interested
parties.
Training and lunch will be provided at no cost.
