Lynchburg MSA ranks second in state in 2008 Best Performing Index

The growing technology base and job growth once again helped to boost the
Lynchburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) to top national
rankings. In the Milken Institute / Greenstreet Real Estate Partners Best
Performing Cities Index that was released this month, Lynchburg ranked 71 of the
200 largest metros in the nation, up 39 positions over last year, and the second highest region in the state. The study ranks U.S. metropolitan areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth.

Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership will hold its annual dinner meeting on Thursday, Oct. 23 at the City of Lynchburg's new Information Technology Center, 3550 Young Place. Guest Speaker will be Tom Christopher, President & CEO, AREVA NP Inc. Reception begins at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Please RSVP by October 15 to mgilley@region2000.org or call 434-845-3491. More than 50 companies are expected to be in attendance and this year's event features four tech challenges that will engage area middle schools and entertain attendees.

Rural long-range transportation plan public information meetings set

The Local Government Council is gathering information for its Rural Long Range
Transportation Plan effort. Residents of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell counties are invited to
comment on growth areas, accident locations, unsafe intersections, roadway
congestion and other transportation needs during public information meetings
that will be held in each locality beginning in October.

Region 2000 Career Center to host GED Day on Oct. 14
|
The Region 2000 Career Center, in partnership with Adult Continuing Education (ACE) of Central Virginia, will host GED Day on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. to help local residents prepare for taking their GED test. If you know someone who might be interested in getting a GED, please let them know. The day will include information, lunch, practice testing, and results discussions. Seating is limited. Creative Innovations art contest supports STEM education AMTI aims to spark imagination, technology and entrepreneurship

Advanced Manufacturing Technology Inc. (AMTI) is sponsoring a statewide juried art exhibition, Creative Innovations, for middle and high school students to be hosted at Amazement Square. The contest supports STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education by
kindling the sparks of imagination, technology and entrepreneurship. To enter, students create a two-dimension illustration or multimedia project suitable for display and include a brief type-written composition describing their innovation.
The deadline for submissions to Amazement Square is no later than Friday, October 17, 2008. Cash prizes totaling $500 will be awarded. Read more here.
