Economic Development Council works with Commonwealth officials to put Region 2000 rural broadband projects on list for potential funding
Governor Kaine launches web portal to allow Virginians to submit projects for consideration

Bryan David of the Economic Development Council has been working closely with state officials and Region 2000 localities this month to gather project ideas and information in meeting deadlines to qualify specific broadband projects for possible funding from the federal stimulus package.
Gov. Tim Kaine recently launched a web portal to allow localities and citizens to contribute to the decision-making process for the distribution of any federal funds that Virginia receives. Broadband projects from each Region 2000 locality was included in the roll-out of the web portal.

Local Government Council takes on payroll and benefits for Partnership

The Region 2000 Local Government Council began staffing, payroll and benefits administration for the Partnership member organizations on January 1, 2009. This transition was a major undertaking for Rosalie Majerus and her staff, as well as Campbell County staff members who previously managed these services for the Partnership. Thank you to Campbell County for the overwhelming amount of support to Partnership employees throughout the years. |
Lower prices and increased flights at Lynchburg Regional Airport

At a recent Region 2000 Economic Development Directors meeting, Lynchburg Regional Airport Director Mark Courtney said they have seen a 42 percent increase in travelers since USAirways dropped fares by as much as 70 percent. The momentum continues as the airport announced this month that USAirways has added an additional flight to Charlotte (departs 7:10 a.m.) and Delta will add an additional flight to Atlanta (departs 12:30 p.m.) beginning April 1. Courtney said the additional flights brings the airport's total outbound seat capacity to a level not seen in more than six years. With the new flights, there will be a total of eight daily departures most days of the week, provided by the two airlines.

Amherst company breaks ground at site for new facility
|
Quality Archery Designs celebrated a construction start on a planned 18,000 square foot facility at the Amelon Commerce Center in Madison Heights this week. The company designs a wide array of archery accessories and bow hunting equipment, as well as providing engraving services through its subsidiary Lasermarx, Inc. According to Amherst County Economic Developer John Mulvey, "This move will allow QAD to create new jobs, make additional investment, and continue to be an outstanding part of the business community in Amherst County."

Career Center to host free seminar series for dislocated workers

The Region 2000 Career Center continues to respond to the increase in local residents who are losing their jobs during this economic downturn. The Center is hosting a series of free seminars to help people cope with layoffs, begin their search for employment, and learn basic computer skills. There are five seminars scheduled at the Bedford Public Library in partnership with the Career Center, CVCC, and the Hope Network:
- Tuesday, March 17, 1:30 - 3 pm - "What Education has to offer You!"
- Friday, March 20, 1:30 - 2:15 pm or 3:30 - 4:15 pm - "Basic Computer Skills"
- Monday, March 24, 1:30 - 3 pm - "Resume Writing and Interview Techniques"
- Friday, March 27, 1:30 - 3 pm - "Job Search Techniques"
- Friday, April 3, 1:30 - 3 pm - "Coping with Job Loss"

Speak Up! Public input to bicycle plan requested

Virginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council (LGC) and the Central Virginia Metropolitan Planning
Organization (CVMPO) are facilitating the revision of the Region 2000 Bicycle
Plan that will support and promote bicycling as a safe and effective mode of
transportation to key destinations in the greater Lynchburg area. All local citizens are encouraged to participate by attending a community workshop (see dates and locations here) or take a three-minute web-based survey here.

CVCC now accepting applications for four-year CVCC/U.Va. Engineering Program
|
Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) is now accepting applications for its four-year engineering degree program with the University of Virginia. In the program, students are offered a two-year associate's degree in engineering at CVCC. Upon completion, qualified students may transfer directly into U.Va.'s program to earn a bachelor's degree in engineering. Students may take classes in Lynchburg or Charlottesville during the final phase. Scholarships are available to qualified applicants. The deadline is April 1. Tech Council seeks nominations for annual awards event to be held May 19

Jonathan Whitt of the Region 2000 Technology Council is seeking nominations for companies or individuals who have had technology achievements in business, innovation, or education over the past year for its 8th Annual Awards Night to be held May 19 at the Kirkley Hotel in Lynchburg. YPCV steps up efforts to help non-profits
|
The Young Professionals of Central Virginia (YPCV) has stepped up its volunteer efforts in the region. In February, members worked at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store (pictured here) and at the Miller Home for Girls where they hung dropped ceiling tiles, installed bathroom partitions, and completed painting projects.
On March 2, YPCV volunteers will read aloud to children at libraries, classrooms and community centers for Read Across America Day, in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday and on March 21, they will be painting at the Free Clinic.

Bob Bailey to serve on energy task force
|
Bob Bailey, Executive Director of the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER) will serve on an interagency task force aimed at creating an energy marketing plan to attract green jobs to the Commonwealth. This is in support of Gov. Tim Kaine's Renew Virginia initiative, which will include legislative and executive actions to make Virginia a leader in energy conservation and efficiency.
