Region 2000 economy at a glance
|
According to the latest data available, Virginia's Region 2000 shows an increase in the number employed when compared to the same time last year. The unemployment rate is also higher, however, now at 4.6 percent. This data does not reflect changes that have occured after November 2008. We are continuing to follow the economic numbers closely and will provide further reports as they come in.

- Civilian labor force - 126,022 (increase of 2,829 over Nov. 2007)
- Number employed - 120,242 (increase of 999 over Nov. 2007)
- Unemployed - 5,780 (increase of 1,830 over Nov. 2007)
- Unemployment rate - 4.6% (it was 3.2% at the same time last year)
- Virginia's unemployment rate - 4.6%
- National unemployment rate - 7.2%

- Median sales price increased by 1.7% over same time last year to $156,897
- Average sales price increased to $183,231 ($175,224 in Q2 2008)

Region 2000 EDC sponsors Entrepreneur Express workshop on Feb. 24

In an effort to help the region's small business owners, the Economic Development Council is sponsoring a free regional Entrepreneur Express Workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lynchburg IT Center, 3550 Young Place. The event is presented by the Virginia Department of Business Assistance (VDBA), the Region 2000 Small Business Development Center, and other state and local agencies. Entrepreneurs will learn how to start and operate a business, grow their business/marketing strategy, finance and manage resources, and get in the running for state and national contracts. WIB recognized with cash award for "most improved program performance"
|
The Workforce Investment Board recently received a letter from Virginia's Community Colleges office of Workforce Administration & Finance notifying them that they will receive $15,000 in local incentive funds for this year to go toward serving adult, youth, and dislocated workers in the region. Gov. Timothy Kaine awarded these funds upon the recommendation of the Virginia Workforce Council in recognition of Region 2000's "most improved program performance."

$1 million CDBG grant for downtown Altavista announced
|
The Local Government Council announced this month that the Town of Altavista is selected to receive a $1 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to renovate downtown storefronts and improve downtown streets. CAER partners with National Instruments to bring LabVIEW seminar
|
The Center for Advanced Engineering & Research (CAER) offered a free three-hour "hands-on" seminar on Jan. 22 at CVCC on how to build measurement and control applications using National Instruments LabView graphical programming. The seminar attracted a large group of attendees and Bob Bailey, CAER Executive Director, hopes to continue these types of high demand seminars in the future.

YPCV to host YP Voices morning chat on Wed., Jan. 28

The Technology Council's Wired Wednesday luncheon will be held on Wed., January 28 at noon at Hilton Garden Inn, Wards Rd., Lynchburg. Attorney R.
