Regional economic impact analysis released this week Study shows that region's industry base is moving toward high-wage, high-growth sectors
Virginia's Region 2000 Economic Development
Council (EDC) released a regional economic impact analysis this week to its
board of directors showing how the local economy is slowly evolving away from
an over-dependence on the manufacturing sector and toward high-wage,
high-growth sectors such as healthcare and professional, technical services.

Funding approved for Rt. 460/29 improvements
Virginia Dept. of Transportation (VDOT) this week announced that the Commonwealth Transportation Board will allocate funding for safety improvements to the 1.5 mile highway stretch along Route 460/29, between Rt. 501 and Rt. 29 (Monacan Parkway) in the City of Lynchburg. This section, which includes multiple driveways and median turns, has experienced a significant increase in accidents since it opened two years ago.
The initial phase of improvements to this corridor will begin in 2010.

Safe Routes to School workshop to be held on Aug. 12, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The Region 2000 Local Government Council announces a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Workshop to be held for all interested citizens and school officials on Wed., August 12 at Hunton-Randolph Community Center, 1120 12th Street, Lynchburg, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Virginia Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School Program is about enabling and encouraging students (in grades K-8) to walk
and bicycle to school safely. The training will enhance the
ability of stakeholders to develop a School Travel Plan and to
implement SRTS programs where they live.

Region 2000 Partnership receives 2009 NADO Innovation Award
Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership has received a 2009 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) for its work on branding the partnership.
The award will be presented publicly at NADO's Annual Training Conference on August 29 in Chicago.

Governor Kaine announces grant for Old Town Madison Heights
Governor Tim Kaine announced this month that Amherst County will receive a $1.1 million grant to revitalize homes in the Old Madison Heights area. Kelly Hitchcock of the Region 2000 Local Government Council wrote the grant proposal, along with Amherst County staff.
The grant will be used to improve homes in the neighborhood and provide infrastructure improvements and water and sewer upgrades.

 The CAER has established a five-year master research agreement with James Madison
University (JMU) to work together to sustain and improve the growth of targeted

Bryan David appointed to Governor's Broadband Advisory Council
Bryan David, Executive Director, Economic Development Council, was recently appointed by Governor Tim Kaine to serve on the Governor's Broadband Advisory Council. The council advises the Governor on policy and funding priorities for
broadband access in the Commonwealth, including opportunities for funding from
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Family Alliance finds work for 110 youth through grant from Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board
The Alliance for Families and Children successfully found 110 area youth from Lynchburg, Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Altavista to participate in the Youth Summer Employment Program, funded through a $290,000 federal grant from the Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board.
