Monthly Scorecard
Here's a snapshot of the most recent economic data (Dec. 2010): - Civilian Labor Force - 121,497 (previous month was 121,445)
- Employed - 112,789 (previous month was 112,351)
- Unemployment Rate - 7.2% (down slightly from previous month, 7.5%)
- Home sales in Virginia - Down 9.8% over same period last year to 82,809 homes sold statewide (*Q4 2010)
- Home sales in Roanoke/Lynchburg/Blacksburg - Total sales dropped dramatically in 3Q 10 but ended the year with monthly increases in November and December. Annual sales (5,900 units) fell 14% below the 2009 figure.
- Median sales price in Virginia - Up 3.3% over same period last year to $236,900 (*Q4 2010)
- Median sales price in Roanoke/Lynchburg/Blacksburg - Median sales prices were steady in 3Q 10 at $165,000, but declined 9% by December. However, the annual median sales price ($155,000) fell less than 2
percent from the 2009 median. The share of total sales of the region's "bread and butter" homes, those priced in the $100Ks or below, advanced beyond the share in 3Q 10. - Economic Development in Virginia - According to yesvirginia.org (Virginia Economic Development Partnership in Richmond), 11 companies announced
in the fourth quarter plans to open new facilities or expand operations, adding 974 new jobs to state payrolls and $41 million in capital investment. Eight of the 11 are manufacturing companies. Over the course of the year, companies have announced plans to add a total of 4,649 new jobs here in Virginia.

Rep. Robert Hurt visits Region 2000 Partnership office
Congressman Robert Hurt, representing the fifth congressional district, and newly appointed District Director Linda Green, met with Region 2000 directors on February 3 to learn about economic development initiatives, as well as regional successes and concerns. During his visit, he also toured the Edison2 shop (the company that won the $5 million automotive X-Prize in 2010.)
This week, he returns to the region to meet with Lynchburg Regional Chamber members. |
U.S. Census announces 2010 population for Virginia and Region 2000
The U.S. Census Bureau released the population data for Virginia this month. Virginia's population topped 8 million at 8,001,024, up 13 percent from 7,078,515 counted in 2000. Within the four county, two city Region 2000 area, the population increased by almost 11 percent to 252,634.

WIB Director to retire in April Virginia's Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board announced this month that Executive Director Danny Inge (pictured) will retire in April after 10 years of service. The WIB Board of Directors will conduct a search for a replacement in the next few months.
The WIB is charged with implementing federally funded workforce investment activities throughout Region 2000 and is responsible for grant administration, providing policy guidance and conducting oversight of all workforce activities. |

Thomasville Furniture Company in Appomattox held a
successful job fair on Feb. 18 and will have another on Friday, March 11, 2:30-4 p.m. to assist nearly 150 employees who will lose their jobs in a month due to closing. Local companies are invited to attend to recruit employees from production management and supervision jobs to purchasing, HR and a host of other positions. CAER facility getting closer to completion
 Construction on the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER) is advancing and providing a nice surprise to those who drive by the U.S. 460 West location in the New London region of Bedford County. A grand opening will be planned later this year, but meanwhile, take a sneak peak at some recent photos posted to Virginia's Region 2000 Facebook page here.

Tech Council to feature 25-year-old, well known entrepreneur at Tenth Annual Awards Night May 17
 Virginia's Region 2000 Technology Council will hold its premier networking event and awards banquet on Tuesday, May 17, 6-9 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, Main St.
In celebration of its 10th Annual Awards Night, the Tech Council will feature globally renowned entrepreneur Cameron Johnson (pictured here) who will speak on 'Entrepreneurial Values and Thinking Differently'.
At only 25, Cameron Johnson is recognized as one of the most successful young entrepreneurs in the world. Earning $15,000 a day by the age of 15, by the time he left high school he had a dozen profitable businesses under his belt. Overseas, he was the youngest American appointed to the board of a Tokyo-based company, and even hosted Beat the Boss, a popular entrepreneurial show on the BBC. You won't want to miss this! CEDS committee adopts projects for regional strategy document

Virginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council is leading a process to complete a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region. A regional leadership team has approved goals and objectives and recently met to review more than 70 regional projects that have been submitted for inclusion in the CEDS document. The final document will go to the federal Economic Development Administration (EDA) and to Gov. McDonnell, as required for obtaining federal infrastructure and development grants for Region 2000 localities in the future.

Lynchburg Community Trust gives grant for Junior FIRST LEGO League
The Future Focus Foundation received a grant in the amount of $2,700 from the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust's Faye Marcum Mifka Fund this month. The grant will be used to sponsor area 6-9 year olds to participate in the Junior FIRST LEGO League. Read the full release here.

Enhanced Business One Stop website launched to help businesses
Governor Bob McDonnell recently announced the launch of the enhanced Virginia Business One Stop website, a streamlined tool to serve the needs of new, existing and small business entrepreneurs. The new website, www.bos.virginia.gov, now propagates registration information to six state agencies that commonly serve businesses in Virginia including the Department of Taxation, Department of General Services, Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, the Virginia Employment Commission, the Department of Business Assistance and the Department of Minority Business Enterprise.
