CVCC's Dr. John Capps inspires crowd with keynote address.

Capps Inspires at Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership Annual Dinner

Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership held its annual dinner on October 20 at the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER). Dr. John S. Capps, president of Central Virginia Community College (CVCC,) gave an inspiring keynote address weaving together the importance of education and workforce development to the region's economic development. Community leaders in business and government listened as Capps described CVCC as "the Ellis Island of higher education."

"We are your partners in fostering higher education," said Capps while highlighting regional amenities such as CAER and workforce programs championed by businesses such as Babcock and Wilcox and AREVA.

Prior to the event, attendees were able to attend a stormwater management session featuring Chris Pomeroy of AquaLaw and organized by the Local Government Council, and to tour the newly-opened CAER.

Technology Council's Whitt Makes the Speaker Rounds

Jonathan WhittTechnology Council Executive Director Jonathan Whitt has been traveling the speakers' circuit over the last few weeks, reinforcing the importance of STEM education, workforce development, and entrepreneurship while outlining Region 2000 models.

Opening Centra's Technology and eLearning Conference on October 25, Whitt took a tongue in cheek look at the changes in medical technology over the years and explored where we're headed in the future with further technology developing at a

rapid pace. He stressed the importance of having an agile, transitional workforce, which included an excerpt from Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Places You'll Go.

Later that week, Whitt joined a panel discussion at the 2011 Virginia Business Incubation Association Conference on Economic Gardening in Roanoke and shared the story of how the Technology Council has built a strong technology-focused network that supports entrepreneurship.

Whitt's final engagement culminated with the Governor's 2nd Annual Forum on Education and Workforce Training on November 2. Again, Whitt explained our Region 2000 models and showed the correlation in preparing our young people for STEM-focused post-secondary education and career opportunities. With 80% of jobs in the next decade requiring some knowledge of science, math or technology, Whitt showed how we are preparing our children for the future.

AREVA Sponsors Science Screen Report for Region 2000 Schools

One of AREVA's strategic goals is supporting and enhancing community efforts to interest students in STEM studies.  By engaging students at a young age, AREVA aims to help energize future engineers and scientists. One of the ways they are doing this in Region 2000 is by sponsoring the Science Screen Report for the region's schools. The DVDs provide brief, informative programs designed to help students understand the vital role science plays in our everyday lives.
