University-based economic developers come to Lynchburg to learn how Region 2000 brought together community and industry leaders to create the CAER
|
More than two dozen university-based officials and economic developers from throughout the Commonwealth came together in Lynchburg to hear a panel discussion that centered around opportunities that exist in tech-based economic development, such as the work being done by the Center for Advanced Engineering & Research (CAER). The half-day panel and Q&A session was sponsored by Virginia's University Based Economic Development Group (UBED) and moderated by Bob Bailey, executive director of the CAER.
Panel representatives included educators from LU, Virginia Tech, UVA and CVCC, as well as industry officials from AREVA and AMTI, and economic developers from Region 2000. The purpose was to explore a model for community and industry-driven partnerships crossing silos between workforce and economic development, universities and community colleges, and companies. "When you have a vision and you know where you want to go, things have a way of coming together," CVCC President Darrel Staat told the attendees in his comments about the history and growth of the CAER. Each panel representative gave an account of the value that the CAER brings to the region from their perspective. "When it comes to company support, it just makes good business sense to invest some of our R&D money with the CAER which can help offset our research workload and grow knowledge creation in the region at the same time," said Jim Hicks, VP of AREVA NP and CAER Board Chairman.
