Region 2000 leaders support work to keep air service strong in region

aiport DeltaThe Region 2000 Economic Development Council (EDC) and Local Government Council (LGC) stepped up efforts during the past couple of months to keep air service strong in the Lynchburg region.

When Delta announced in late October that it would pull service out of Lynchburg in January, 2011, EDC and LGC board members quickly responded to the efforts of Airport Director Mark Courtney and the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce to keep Delta in Lynchburg.

The EDC board members, most of which are local business leaders, wrote letters to the Delta CEO to encourage a closer look at the business case behind the decision. They cited strong passenger numbers in the region and the importance of the Atlanta connections to business-critical travel.

The region's local government leaders who sit on the board of the LGC also answered the call to support these efforts. They wrote and signed an official resolution citing Delta's 16-year history in the region and that 2010 had the highest number of passengers in that history, among other facts.

Since the letters were sent, airport officials have been working on alternative solutions as well, such as meeting with other airlines as reported by the News and Advance here.

Thanks to everyone who participated in these efforts. We will stay in close contact with the Lynchburg Chamber and airport officials to follow the situation.

CEDS committee now accepting local projects that meet regional economic development strategy objectives

CEDS micVirginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council is leading a process to complete a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region. This work will go to the federal Economic Development Administration (EDA) and to Gov. McDonnell, and will be pivotal in obtaining federal infrastructure and development grants for Region 2000 localities in the future.

A CEDS committee of more than 50 business, local government, and non-profit leaders are accepting and documenting projects that make the biggest impact on long-term economic growth in the region. These projects must be listed in the CEDS document to be considered for EDA funding.  Examples of projects include (but are not limited to) infrastructure items for localities such as sewer and water lines, business parks or buildings, research oriented activities, etc.

Region 2000 localities and CEDS committee members may submit projects to the Local Government Council (gmassie@region2000.org) via email by Friday, January 14, 2011. The projects will be scored and prioritized for the CEDS based on the potential jobs they can create and a number of other factors. Please contact Grant Massie at 434-845-3491 for more information or to obtain a CEDS form.

The next CEDS Public Meeting will be held on Wed., January 12, 2011. Watch for location and further details on our website.
