CAER gets $7.6 million to build regional research center

CAER logoThe Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER) was recently awarded $7.6 million from the Virginia Tobacco Commission to build a nuclear energy research center in the New London Technology Park in Bedford County. See full release here.

According to Bob Bailey, CAER Executive Director, his organization is currently:

  • Preparing an RFP for release in early September for A&E services, and
  • Establishing a design review committee made up of industry and university partners to serve as advisors for the building project.

Local Government Council receives 2008 Robert W. Baker Achievement Award
LGC awardVirginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council received the Robert W. Baker Achievement Award for 2008 from the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions (VAPDC) at the association's annual meeting held recently at Virginia Beach. The Council was recognized for its innovative work in regional cooperation and planning.

Bryan David presents regional outlook in Lynchburg and Richmond

Bryan DavidBryan David, Economic Development Council, presented an economic outlook for Virginia's Region 2000 at the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce Business at Breakfast on August 13. Click here to download his ppt presentation (pdf). 

Bryan was also asked to speak on regional economic develepment and "last mile" broadband at the Virginia General Assembly's Joint Subcommittee on August 18. (House Joint Resolution 75.)

State grant will help develop inventory of region's vertical assets
GISVirginia's Region 2000 Partnership has been awarded a $35,000 grant from the Virginia Productivity Investment Fund to develop a geographic information-based system to inventory the region's vertical assets, aimed at faster deployment of wireless broadband services. Read the full story here.

2008 study reveals region's broadband footprint
Also completed this month, the Local Government Council posted a 2008 Broadband Infrastructure Study detailing broadband technologies, service plans, and coverage data within the region. View detailed findings from the report here.
Social networking is topic for next Wired Wednesday luncheon on Sept. 10
