Region 2000 Strategic Plan is getting an update
The
Region 2000 Partnership Coordinating Council which is made up of two members from
each of the participating partner's boards, along with more than a dozen business and community leaders, will meet this week to review proposed changes to the overall Partnership Strategic Plan. The plan becomes a source document for the next five-year fundraising cycle that will begin in 2011.

Federal grant brings broadband to local schools
The Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative (MBC) was granted $16 million from the Federal Broadband Stimulus Program to expand fiber-optic, high-speed Internet to 121 K-12 schools in Southern Virginia, nearly 40 residing in Bedford and Campbell counties. For more information, click here.

Amherst and Bedford County leaders move forward on rural broadband
The Bedford County Broadband Authority voted this month to enter into
negotiations with Ashburn-based DigitalBridge Communications
Corporation to deliver digital broadband service to unserved and
underserved areas of the county. This followed a similar vote from Amherst County that allows negotiations to take place on an agreement between each county
and the firm that could result in the expansion of high-speed Internet
coverage to the rural areas.

YP Voices Luncheon on Feb. 25 to look at developing your potential
The Young Professionals of Central Virginia (YPCV) will host a YP Voices Luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 25, Noon - 1 p.m. at Terrace on the James, 8th Floor Bank of the James Building, Lynchburg (828 Main St.) Cheryl Smith, President of CultureSmith Consulting will share insights into identifying and developing your potential. Tech Council kicks off robotics competition

The Region 2000 Technology Council and the Future Focus Foundation have kicked off the first ever Junior FIRST Lego League season in Central Virginia. Fourteen teams of kids ages 6-9 will meet over the coming weeks to design, build, and program an original model complete with moving parts using the We-Do Lego Education kit.
The Junior FIRST program aligns with the Tech Council's vision for the region to be recognized as a place where technology-focused organizations thrive, STEM education programs flourish, and innovation and tech-based entrepreneurship is championed.
Teams will gather on May 1 at TC Miller Elementary School for a Junior FIRST tournament where they will share the results of their achievements.

Battlefield at Appomattox Station preserved
47 acres of 1865 Battlefield added to saved column
The Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) recently announced that it had met
its fundraising goal and acquired 47 acres of the Appomattox Station Battlefield. The Region 2000 Local Government Council administered

| Sweet Briar receives $3 million for engineering program
Former Sweet Briar student Margaret "Peggy" Jones Wyllie donated $3 million to support Sweet Briar College's engineering program. Wyllie majored in chemistry because there were few opportunities for women to study engineering 65 years ago. Sweet Briar is one of only two U.S. women's colleges to offer an engineering degree.
