CAER shows conceptual design draft of research facility
The Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER) recently
completed its interactive design workshop on the planned research and
education facility and showed the latest conceptual design at a recent CAER board meeting.
According to Executive Director Bob Bailey, the board is currently working on cost estimates to determine if the concept is compatible with the budget. Seven Region 2000 localities awarded Transportation Enhancement Grants
- Funds to be used for sidewalks, walking trails, park improvements and more
The Commonwealth Transportation Board announced on Thursday more than $1.4 million in Transportation Enhancement Grants for seven Region 2000 communities, including the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford, the counties of Amherst and Appomattox, and the towns of Altavista, Amherst, and Brookneal. Jonathan Whitt attains economic development certification
Tech Council Executive
Director Jonathan Whitt, recently earned Certified Economic Developer status
through the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The program requires at least four years of professional experience in the profession, completion of at least six economic development classes and rigorous testing.

YPCV shines at Lynchburg's Relay for Life
YPCV's Live Committee raised
over $1,600 at Lynchburg's
Relay for Life fundraiser last month. The money that was raised, which totals
over $235,000, will go towards cancer research and the quest for finding a
cure. The team manned a decorated tent selling Red Bull, glow sticks and cakes to raise funds for the cause.

Region 2000 Career Center experiences heavy traffic
Throughout the past couple of months the Region 2000 Career Center has had more than 4,000 area citizens walk through its doors to utilize services.
The Region 2000 Career Center is the service delivery site for the
Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board.
Summer employment program starts strong, more companies welcome!
As communicated previously (see story here), The
Alliance for Families and Children, along with Central Virginia
Community College, will employ 110 young adults this summer. The program gives
students work experience and a paycheck, and is
possible through a $290,000 federal grant from the Region 2000 Workforce Investment
Board.
Program leaders received 472 pre-applications from youth ages 14-24. Out of the 110 participants selected, 58 are still in school and 53 are out of school. At this time, the Alliance is enrolling, assessing and matching youth to
local employers. All participants go through a Work Readiness Training program prior to working.

Kelly Hitchcock completes Natural Resource Leadership Institute Fellowship
 Regional Development
Specialist Kelly Hitchcock of the Local Government Council recently completed a year-long fellowship with the Virginia Natural Resource Leadership Institute (VNRLI). Kelly was one of only 23 individuals accepted to the VNRLI Fellowship last year and has since been studying timely state and regional environmental topics such as natural resource issues, sustainable agriculture and forestry, and cultural awareness and environmental justice. VNRLI, in its tenth year, was recognized by the 2009 Virginia General Assembly for outstanding efforts to improve the way environmental decisions are made in the Commonwealth. Preparations underway for 2010 Census
The Local Government Council recently helped six Region 2000 localities to prepare for the 2010 Census by updating and reviewing census boundaries, census block groups, and Census Designated Places (CDPs.) Read the full story here.
