B&W announces testing facility to be located in Bedford County
The Babcock & Wilcox company recently announced that it would
locate its B&W mPower™ Integrated System Test facility to the
Center for Advanced Engineering and Research, currently under construction in Bedford County's New London area. The
facility will house a scaled prototype
of the mPower™ reactor that will undergo extensive testing to test the
reactor design and safety performance. Read the full press release here.

CEDS committee begins work to develop a regional economic strategy
Virginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council kicked off its first meeting with the newly established Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) committee on Thursday, Aug. 19 at the Lynchburg IT Center.
More than 50 business, local government and non-profit leaders have been
appointed to the committee and information will be shared at a series
of public meetings held throughout the year. Co-chairs are Lynchburg Mayor Joan Foster and local business leader Robert Leveque. The CEDS team will inventory economic development activities and plan future projects to benefit the region. A completed CEDS document will go to the Federal
Economic Development Administration and Virginia's
Governor, and will be pivotal in obtaining federal infrastructure and
development grants in the future. The document will also serve as the region's roadmap for
economic development projects.

 Virginia's Region 2000 Technology Council is hosting its quarterly Wired Wednesday luncheon on August 25 at the Holiday Inn, Lynchburg. The event will feature Bob Bailey from the Center for Advanced Engineering & Research, who will give an update on the exciting developments with the CAER. The event will be held from Noon - 1:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for Tech Council members and $15 for

Governor's Broadband Advisory Council holds first meeting in Lynchburg

McDonnell's Broadband Advisory Council selected Lynchburg for its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, August 24 at CVCC's Merritt Hall. Bryan David, Executive Director, Region 2000 Economic Development Council, serves on the Council that exists to advise the Governor on policy and funding priorities to expedite deployment and reduce the cost of broadband access in the Commonwealth. The 11-member council is comprised of a mix of state legislators, cabinet secretaries and industry representatives.
Bryan is thrilled that the Council selected Region 2000 and CVCC to host the first meeting. "This gives us an opportunity to assist with broadband policy at the state level and brings more awareness about our region's strong public-private broadband initiatives," he said.

For technology start-ups and early stage tech firms,
funding your research and commercialization efforts is key to success.
The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) is a state funded non-profit
in Virginia with a mission to help support the funding needs of early
stage technology entrepreneurs. They will host a session on Federal Funding and Private Equity Funding, followed by Q&A. No cost to attend but advance online registration is requested due to space constraints.

Bob White is appointed to State Water Supply Plan Advisory Committee
 The General Assembly recently enacted legislation forming
the State Water Supply Plan Advisory Committee. The Committee's charge is to
advise the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality on
policies and programs to advance the Commonwealth's water resource management. Previously, the General Assembly enacted legislation
requiring all localities, preferably on a regional basis, to develop water
supply plans. The Region 2000 Local Government Council worked with Region 2000 localities and successfully undertook this effort. Based on this work, Bob
White, Deputy Director for the Council has been appointed to the new Committee. The Committee's work is expected to take two years and
result in a state water resources plan. For further information please contact

Citizens invited to comment on regional bike plan
Local citizens are invited to review
and comment on the DRAFT Region 2000 Bicycle Plan, a long-term planning
document to develop on-road bicycle accommodations within the greater Region
2000 area.

Virginia's Region 2000 Technology Council will host its 5th Annual Future Focus EXPO on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Tolsma Indoor Track, Liberty University. The EXPO is a career exploration event for middle and high school students and their parents. Each year it grows and attracts more students!
