Intersections Inc. brings 250 jobs to Altavista

Altavista Office ParkIntersections Inc., a global provider of consumer and corporate identity risk management services, announced this month that they will establish a call center in Altavista.

The company will bring 250 jobs and will begin hiring immediately.

Home sales in Lynchburg area on the rise

Home sales in the region are rising again. A 2010 first quarter report released by the Virginia Association of Realtors shows a 5.2 percent home sales increase in the area from last year, while median sales prices dropped 4.7 percent in the region.

The home sales increase is well above the state average of a -1.1 percent change in home sales.

 Committee to develop economic strategy for region

LGC MeetingVirginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council is forming a committee to develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region.
 
The CEDS team will inventory economic development activities and plan future projects to benefit the region.  The completed document will go to the Federal Economic Development Administration and Virginia's Governor, and will be pivotal in obtaining federal infrastructure and development grants in the future. The document will also serve as the region's roadmap for economic development in the future.

A committee comprised of more than 50 business, local government and non-profit leaders is currently being appointed and will be finalized shortly.

Next Wired Wednesday set for August 25

Wired WednesdayVirginia's Region 2000 Technology Council is hosting its next quarterly Wired Wednesday luncheon on August 25 at the Holiday Inn, Lynchburg. The event will feature Bob Bailey from the Center for Advanced Engineering & Research, who will give an update on the exciting things happening with the CAER. The event will be held from Noon - 1:30 p.m. The cost is $10 for Tech Council members and $15 for non-members.

YPCV reaches out to new hires

The Young Professionals of Central Virginia (YPCV) has launched an initiative to reach out to new hires in Region 2000. The YPCV is distributing welcome packets to HR representatives at area companies to pass on to incoming young professionals.
 
The packets include a welcome letter, a YP membership card (that may later be activated) and a YPCV stainless steel water bottle.
 
Abe Loper, Executive Director of the YPCV, says he hopes this effort will help new employees in the area feel welcome and direct them to opportunities to connect with other young professionals right away.

YP Voices set for July and August

Altavista logoThe Young Professionals of Central Virginia (YPCV) will host their monthly YP Voices lunch on July 28 and August 25.

The July event will feature Jeff Fedorko, owner of Riverside Runners, who will discuss how he built his thriving business.

The August event will host John Keith, HR director at J. Crew, who will share knowledge from his more than 40 years of experience.

YP Voices takes place monthly at noon at Terrace on the James, 8th floor in the Bank of the James building, downtown Lynchburg..

The Center for Advanced Engineering & Research has announced the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program (CGEP) course schedule for the fall semester.

The CGEP provides high-quality, post-baccalaureate engineering education for practicing engineers and scientists in Central Virginia.

Virginia Tech, GMU, ODU, UVa and VCU provide classes on a broad range of engineering topics. The classes are held at Central Virginia Community College, providing accessibility to people all over Central Virginia.

Future Focus EXPO 2010 set for October 12

FutureEXPOKidsVirginia's Region 2000 Technology Council will host its 5th Annual Future Focus EXPO on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Tolsma Indoor Track, Liberty University.

The EXPO is a career exploration event for middle and high school students and their parents. Last year's event brought out more than 1,200 students to participate in technology challenges and learn about promising careers from more than 50 local companies. The Expo will host school groups from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and will be open to the public from 4 - 9 p.m. Don't miss an opportunity to promote your company and reach your future employees.
