Invitation to attend Region 2000 Annual Dinner meeting on Oct. 21

Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership will hold its annual dinner meeting on Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Holiday Inn, Downtown Lynchburg. A reception begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Roger Stough, VP Research and Economic Development at George Mason University, will speak about the role of leadership and entrepreneurship in regional economic development.

This event is open to all Region 2000 staff, board members, local business leaders and investors, and their guests. Cost is $28. Please RSVP by Friday, Oct. 15 to Marjorie Gilley at mgilley@region2000.org or 434-845-3491.
CEDS Committee probes area's strengths and weaknesses

Virginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council hosted the second meeting of the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) committee on Wednesday, September 8 at the Lynchburg IT Center.
 
This meeting focused on creating a S.W.O.T. (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis for the region, and participants were given an opportunity to voice their opinions on which areas were the most essential.
 
The CEDS team will inventory economic development activities and plan future projects to benefit the region. A completed CEDS document will go to the Federal Economic Development Administration and Virginia's Governor, and will be pivotal in obtaining federal infrastructure and development grants in the future.

Public Information Meeting for CEDS is Oct. 13

A public information and input meeting for the CEDS is scheduled for Oct. 13, 5 p.m. at the Lynchburg Public Library. The meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to review and comment on strengths and weaknesses in our region.

LinkedIn Live is Wed., Sept. 22

LinkedIn LiveThe Region 2000 Technology Council, YPCV, and CAER, along with several other organizations, are sponsoring a LinkedIn Live event from 5 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 22, at Neighbors Place restaurant in Forest.

The event presents an opportunity to connect with other LinkedIn users in Region 2000 face-to-face. Beverages and heavy hors d' oeuvres are included in the price. Tickets are $15 at the door.

The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) is a state funded non-profit in Virginia with a mission to help support the funding needs of early stage technology entrepreneurs. They will host a session on Federal Funding and Private Equity Funding, followed by Q&A. No cost to attend but advance online registration is requested due to space constraints.

The Young Professionals of Central Virginia (YPCV) will host its monthly YP Voices lunch on Wed., Sept. 22 at noon at Terrace on the James (8th floor, Bank of the James building downtown Lynchburg.) Harvey Scott, a venture capitalist working with Kickstart Seed Fund, will share some of the ins and outs of capital investing and business start-ups.

YPCV at Virginia 10 Miler - Sept. 25
The historic Virginia 10 Miler will celebrate its 37th year on Saturday September 25. The YPCV is looking for volunteers to work water stations, hand out race numbers, register runners, and more. The race begins at 8 a.m. and volunteers are requested to arrive at 7 a.m. Volunteers will receive a complimentary t-shirt. To sign up, please email Darrell Wargo at dawrun@hotmail.com. Future Focus EXPO 2010 spotlights careers for next generation of workers

B&W expo boothVirginia's Region 2000 Technology Council will host the region's Fifth Annual Future Focus EXPO on Tuesday, October 12 from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. at Liberty University's Tolsma Indoor Track.

The EXPO is a science and technology career exploration event for middle and high school students and their parents. It features more than 50 interactive displays from local companies and is designed to educate families on promising careers found in the region. Read more here.

Bedford County celebrates successful "One Program"

Bedford One ProgramBedford County's Office of Economic Development held a Business Appreciation Event on Tuesday, Sept. 21 to thank more than two dozen local companies for their involvement in this year's Bedford One Program. The One Program matches Bedford County high school students with local companies for a day to give kids a first hand look at what jobs they have in their own county.

Two students and one career coach, pictured at left, spoke to the group of employers about what the program means to them. "It was great to see how much goes into a product before it ever hits the shelf," said one student.

Dr. Douglas Schuch, Bedford County Schools Superintendent, thanked the businesses for reaching out to the school community and said he hopes to see more programs like it in the future.

Reading is Power initiative launches

AREVA's fourth Reading is Power initiative, a cooperation with public libraries in our region, will run from August 30 to November 1.

The program encourages middle school students to read about science and technology, and every student who participates will be rewarded at a November 13 party.

Virginia: Energy Capital of the East Coast
The Governor's Conference on Energy to be held Oct. 12-14

Energy ConferenceGov. Bob McDonnell will host Virginia: Energy Capital of the East Coast October 12-14, 2010 at the Richmond Convention Center, Richmond, Virginia.

Hear nationally recognized speakers and attend conference sessions on topics ranging from energy business in Virginia to demand-side management programs. Bob Bailey, Executive Director CAER, will present two panel discussions during the conference.

Climate Change and Water Resources Workshop to be held Nov. 15

The Region 2000 Local Government Council is cosponsoring a workshop examining the effects of climate change on water resources. The Cabell Brand Center for Global Poverty and Resource Sustainability Studies is hosting the one-day workshop entitled "The Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources and Water Infrastructures: Mitigation and Adaptation at the Local Level."

The workshop will take place on November 15, 2010 at the Frontier Museum Lecture Hall, Staunton, Virginia. Instructors include experts from the U.S. EPA, Planning District Commissions and Virginia Tech.
