Brookneal Downtown Revitalization Project
First a center for tobacco shipments on the Staunton (Roanoke) River in the early 19th century, the Town of Brookneal has adapted to meet economic changes over time. Since the decline of several textile and forest product businesses in the last decade, the Brookneal community has set its eyes on a comprehensive economic development strategy, which includes industrial development, the fostering of small business in the downtown district, and the development of a greater connection between the Town’s business community and the cultural, historical, and natural attractions that surround Brookneal. As part of this effort, the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development funded a CDBG Planning project to determine needs and outcomes for the downtown district. A holistic plan has been developed, which includes much needed sidewalk and streetscape improvements, building façade renovations, increased signage to attract travelers off of US 501 and into downtown, and the rehabilitation of several derelict single family residences adjacent to the central business district. Future plans call for the development of a farmers market and a trail that will connect the nearby park and boat ramp on the Staunton River to Brookneal’s downtown. Project partners: Town of Brookneal and the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development. Project contact: Scott Smith.
