CVCC Summer Career Academies Program Continues to Expand
August 23, 2010
During the first week of August, Central Virginia Community College, in alliance
with the Region 2000 Tech Prep Consortium and the Region 2000 Technology
Council, hosted their 12th annual Summer Career Academies program for local
middle and high school students. The Academies began on Monday, August 2, and
were held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. A closing celebration was held “Under the Big
Top” at CVCC in the Campus Courtyard at noon on Friday, August 6.
CVCC
offers these dynamic, hands-on educational adventures that explore such diverse
and exciting subjects as aviation technologies, crime scene investigation,
nuclear technologies, building trades, culinary arts, advanced manufacturing,
health and information technologies, motorsports, scientific experiments, and
women in engineering.
The summer career academies program continues to
expand, with 238 students this year, and 19 camps offered at 11 different
locations. Four participating school divisions in the Region 2000 consortium
hosted academies in their schools, while many of the camps are held at local
businesses. This year’s 39 sponsors included such companies and organizations
as AREVA, Babcock & Wilcox, RM Gantt Construction, Bedford Community Health
Foundation, Wegmann USA, Region 2000 Technology Council, and more.
The
program is open to all middle and high school students within Region 2000 on a
first-come, first-served basis. The academies are part of the larger concept of
Career Pathways in which promising young students are educated and encouraged to
identify and follow meaningful career paths from middle school through college
and beyond.
