More than 330 physicians from all major specialties practice in the area ... providing the skills and expertise needed to complement the Region's well-equipped facilities. Major site expansions currently underway in the region include a new five-story patient care tower at Lynchburg General Hospital. Centra HealthLocated in the heart of Region 2000 in Lynchburg, Centra Health is a nationally ranked and award winning hospital in Cardiac Care, Critical Care and Nursing services. Patient satisfaction scores at Centra Health's two Lynchburg Hospitals, Virginia Baptist Hospital and Lynchburg General Hospital, consistently rank among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the country. Centra Health is also a recognized Magnet facility, certified from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).The award, earned by less than 160 hospitals in the country, recognizes excellence in 14 rigorous standards that touch all aspects of superior nursing, from patient care quality to nursing education and leadership. Magnet facilities also consistently rank among the most successful hospitals in recruiting and retaining nurses. Lynchburg General HospitalLynchburg General provides emergency and critical care services, orthopedic services including Joint Camp, neurology and neurosurgery, diabetes/renal services, pulmonary care and an outpatient surgery center. The Stroobants Heart Center at Lynchburg General has been named one of the top 100 cardiac centers in the United States on two occasions. More than 4000 major cardiac procedures are performed there each year. The Emergency Department handles more than 75,000 patients each year. There are currently 218 staffed acute care beds at Lynchburg General, and construction is underway on a 108-bed tower to enhance and expand in-patient services. Virginia Baptist HospitalVirginia Baptist provides women’s and children’s services, including the region's only neonatal intensive care unit. Cancer care services, skilled care and rehabilitation services and mental health and substance abuse treatment are also located on the Virginia Baptist campus. Speciality services including the Wound Care Center, the Sleep Center and the Heartburn Treatment Center are all located at Virginia Baptist, which was founded in 1924 and has 224 staffed beds. Bedford Memorial HospitalBedford Memorial Hospital, located in Bedford, Virginia, is another hospital in the region with plans of expansion. Some of the current services provided are behavioral health, cardiac care, long-term care and Hospice. Bedford Memorial Hospital is co-owned by Centra Health and Carilion Health System. Nursing Homes and Retirement FacilitiesThere are 25 Nursing Homes and 17 Retirement Homes/Independent Living Communities in the region, including many townhome and “condo” style units.
