Local
Government Council nabs 2008 Robert W. Baker Achievement Award for its work in
regionalism
Virginia’s Region 2000 Local Government Council received the Robert W. Baker
Achievement Award for 2008 from the Virginia Association of Planning District
Commissions (VAPDC) at the association’s annual meeting held recently at
Virginia Beach.
The Award recognizes those who have contributed
significantly to regional planning and development in Virginia.
“We
presented our highest achievement award this year to the entire Board of
Directors of the Local Government Council,” said VAPDC President Coleman Speece.
“Their innovative work in regional cooperation and planning exemplifies with
distinction what regions are working to accomplish throughout
Virginia.”
Local Government Council Executive Director Gary Christie
stated, “Our board members help pave the way for regional cooperation on issues
that impact our residents day to day so it’s quite an honor for them to be
recognized in this way.”
The Council is part of Virginia’s Region 2000
Partnership that has brought together six economic development organizations to
better coordinate efforts that promote the region’s strengths and
opportunities.
The Council assists the region’s local governments with
transportation planning and infrastructure development through grants writing
and project management. The Local Government Council also coordinates
multi-jurisdictional planning and services, such as the Region 2000 Services
Authority’s regional landfill.
The VAPDC is a statewide organization of
23 regional commissions working with state and local government to strengthen
multi-jurisdictional cooperation and economic development infrastructure.
