Lynchburg MSA moves up in "best city" rankings for second straight year

The Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) moved up 11 positions over last year in The Milken Institute / Greenstreet Real Estate Partners Best Performing Cities Index, released on November 11, 2009. The MSA includes the four-county Region 2000 geographic area, surrounding the City of Lynchburg.

Lynchburg ranked 60 of the 200 largest metros in the nation, based on how well the region creates and sustains jobs, among other economic growth factors. In 2008, Lynchburg ranked 71, up 39 positions over the previous year. The components of the study include job, wage and salary, and technology growth.

According to Bryan David, Executive Director of Virginia’s Region 2000 Economic Development Council, among Virginia’s metros in this study, Lynchburg ranked second, just after the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria region which topped the state in an increased ranking of 25, up from 41st position last year. Of the other Virginia regions, Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News ranked 87, Richmond ranked 118, Roanoke ranked 126, and Kingsport-Bristol ranked 133.
