Lynchburg City, Lynchburg City Schools (LCS), and Virginia’s Region 2000 Local Government Council have partnered together to establish the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program at six LCS  pilot elementary schools.  SRTS is a national program to make walking and biking to school a safer and more appealing option to access school.

Dearington, Linkhorne, Perrymont, R. S. Payne, T. C. Miller, and W. M. Bass elementary schools were awarded a$2,000 SRTS Mini-Grant from the Richmond-based nonprofit Prevention Connections to Participate in International Walk to School Day, Wednesday, October 5, 2011.

On the morning of October 5th students, including bus and car riders, will walk along with parents, teachers, and community volunteers from a central location located close to each school to recognize International Walk to School Day.  Walk to School Day events are hosted across the Country to create safer routes for children to walk and bike to local schools, remind motorist to be alert and drive accordingly around school facilities, and to emphasize the importance of physical activity in the health and well-being of our children.
