The Museum of the Confederacy broke ground on an 11,700 square foot building at the intersection of Routes 24 and 460 in Appomattox on Sept. 23. The museum, expected to be complete in 2012, will feature artifacts such as the uniform and sword that Robert E. Lee wore and other notable artifacts from the end of the war and reunification of the nation. In addition to the 5,000 square feet of exhibit space, the museum will also have a 1,000 square-foot multi-purpose room to be used for educational programs and meetings. The exterior will feature a patio perfect for hosting an outdoor event and living history programs.
The Museum of the Confederacy Appomattox will be the largest single project from the Civil War Sesquicentennial. For more information, please visit www.moc.org.
