Regional Broadband Infrastructure Study - May 2004 (2.5MB)

The purpose of the project was to provide the economic development departments in the region with an assessment of the high-speed Internet capability available in the Region 2000 area. The primary goal of this project was to discover who were the Internet providers in the region, what they had to offer and where they offered it. The study served two purposes.  First was to identify and catalog the broadband resources in the region with an emphasis on discovering the region’s strengths and weakness in this area. The second was to suggest solutions to the problem areas as well as how the region should proceed to implement the suggested solutions. For the most updated report (2008) click here.

The guide is being used to assist in: infrastructure configurations, identifications of proven commercial, research and education collaborations, and make suggestions to attract public/private investment financing. The study also identified next generation land-based and wireless communication business/industries that need to be included within a technology park to best utilize and profit from the future fiber optic capabilities to be provided by the e58 Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative.

History

The Region 2000 Technology Council (R2KTC) was formed in the year 2000 by a group of technology minded business and community leaders who met on a regular basis and organized under the direction of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Association and Virginia's Region 2000.  By the spring of 2002, it was apparent to those involved in the Technology Council that the organization needed to stand on it own as a viable asset to the community.  In June of 2002, the R2KTC incorporated as a 501c (6) non-profit business organization. With an initial 12 board members, 20 member organizations, and 3 working committees, the Council doubled its size in its first year.  Today the Council has 18 board members and more than 50 member organizations. The R2KTC continues to grow, providing valuable resource to its members and the communities within Virginia's Region 2000.
