Public meeting on water quality to be held Dec. 9
Hear about a plan to provide water quality improvements to eight streams in Region 2000
November 19, 2010
Virginia’s Region 2000 Local
Government Council will hold a public meeting on Thursday, December 9 at 6:30
p.m. to discuss a plan to clean up portions of eight streams that drain
from the City of Lynchburg and portions of Amherst, Bedford, and Campbell
counties. The meeting will be held at the Lynchburg Public Library Community
Room, 2315 Memorial Ave.
The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), in partnership with local
residents, has been working to develop a watershed plan to reduce sources of
bacteria contamination from eight local stream segments. The water quality plan
outlines a suggested series of actions and strategies to be implemented over
time to meet water quality standards. The plan is called a Total Maximum Daily
Load (TMDL) Implementation Plan.
The local streams included are: 18.43 miles of James River, 5.37 miles of Ivy
Creek, 5.9 miles of Tomahawk Creek, 3.47 miles of Burton Creek, 10.55 miles of
Judith Creek, 5.45 miles of Fishing Creek, 10.24 miles of Blackwater Creek and
8.5 miles of Beaver Creek.
During the public meeting, residents who live, work and play in the study area
pictured here will be:
- Presented an overview of the existing water quality of the streams;
- Provided an overview of the suggested strategies and actions to be taken in the watershed to reduce bacteria loads in the water bodies;
- Provided an opportunity to review and provide public comment on Draft TMDL IP, or watershed plan.
