Technology Initiatives

Spending Time and Money where it does the Region the most good

Technology Initiatives are of great importance to the future of Region 2000. Leading the way on behalf of the region is the Region 2000 Technology Council. The R2KTC is one of ten technology councils in the state of Virginia which make up the Virginia Technology Alliance and represent our regional technology interests. The Technology Council is an association of diverse businesses and organizations working together to ensure the continued growth and long-term competitiveness of Region 2000's dynamic technology-based economy. Combining an environment that fosters innovation with initiatives that enhance the availability and application of technology, the R2KTC leverages economic development opportunities and improves quality of life for the entire region.

Current Technology Initiatives

Peer2Peer Groups

The R2KTC is helping to form vertically oriented symbiotic groups to help foster knowledge transfer, marketing partnerships, and innovation sharing—for example, IT Administrators, Technology Manufacturing, and Technology Educators.

Broadband Infrastructure

After producing an extensive and detailed report of the state of broadband, Region 2000 is working to improve broadband infrastructure and increase awareness for the current providers. Please see the findings of the 2008 Broadband Study.

Wireless Hotspots

As wireless technology continues to have a more dynamic effect on business, the R2KTC is actively promoting existing hotspots as well as constantly helping new hotspots come online. Region 2000 is currently home to more than 50 wireless hotspots—one of the highest concentrations in the Commonwealth. Our goal is to make Region 2000 one of the best connected wireless regions in the country.

Technology Innovation Center

The R2KTC is currently studying the viability and economic impact of a University-led research and development center.  These centers, supported by universities like Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia, provide the impetus for innovation and seeds for economic development.

Outreach and Advocacy

By working with the regional school systems, community colleges, and universities, the R2KTC provides internship opportunities and training in order to develop the region’s future technology workforce.

Marketing and Networking Opportunities

The R2KTC has a solid sponsorship program for annual corporate sponsors as well as event sponsors. The Council holds numerous networking and educational events throughout the year that include breakfast and lunch learning seminars, awards and recognition events, and technology forums.
