Welcome to the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER)
Advancing Innovation and Technology Based Economic Development (TBED) in Virginia's Region 2000
The Center for Advanced Engineering and Research is a Region 2000 initiative to develop an industry-focused regional research and development center that drives the development of innovative products and processes by providing local access to university and federal research and inventions. It targets the growth industries specific to the region and puts university innovations into action through practical implementation in industry. The goal is to increase the competitiveness for core, high wage industries and improve the long-term prospects of existing industrial employers by creating a knowledge-based research hub for the region.
CAER Vision
The CAER is dedicated to the creation of an industry-based research hub in Region 2000 that will bring together private and public money, talent and resources to foster knowledge creation, facilitate technology transfer and improve the scientific and engineering workforce to benefit local industry.

The Major Strategies for the CAER
- Establish formal and informal collaborative relationships with major research universities and Federal laboratories
- Identify and accelerate opportunities for the development of key technologies for targeted industry clusters in the region. Target industries are those with high growth potential through innovation, R&D, and technology transfer.
- Current initiatives are targeted at the nuclear energy cluster and the wireless communications cluster in the region.
- Attract federal, state and other research funding in support of industry/university technology initiatives
- Develop the physical infrastructure needed to support TBED functions
- Build a knowledge based workforce by providing educational opportunities in post-secondary and graduate level STEM programs, as well as related professional development for scientists and engineers
- Develop and offer support strategies for technology transfer and commercialization of technologies
