Verizon presents $8,700 grant for youth programs

June 9, 2010

The Future Focus Foundation received a grant this week from the Verizon Foundation for S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs targeted toward elementary and middle school students in Virginia’s Region 2000. In connection with the Region 2000 Technology Council, the Future Focus Foundation will use the funds to provide Lego education materials and curriculum for use in area schools and extracurricular Lego programs.

The Lego We-Do (for 6-9 year olds) and Mindstorms NXT (for 9-14 year olds) materials are nationally recognized as foundational S.T.E.M. education materials. The Virginia Technology Alliance (VTA) recently endorsed Lego education materials as primary tools for providing Virginia’s youth with high quality education experiences in S.T.E.M-related fields. These materials are provided free of charge to area schools. To find out how to access the materials, educators should contact Janet Walton at jwalton@region2000.org or at 434-420-0136.

The Future Focus Foundation, created specifically to support the S.T.E.M. education programs of the Region 2000 Technology Council, seeks to prepare and encourage K-12 area students to seek careers in high-demand S.T.E.M. fields and to provide a pipeline for a technically and scientifically proficient workforce in Virginia’s Region 2000.
