Virginia’s Region 2000 Partnership connects veterans with local jobs
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 15, 2008
Lynchburg, Va. — Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership will join with seven local companies at the Military Job Fair of Virginia on Thursday, April 17 in Hampton, Va. to highlight the wide variety of job opportunities and quality of life in Region 2000. The event is one of the biggest military job fairs on the east coast and provides jobseekers with a rare opportunity to network with human resources personnel representing more than 120 companies from around the nation.
“This is a first for our region,” said Lee Cobb, executive director of Virginia’s Region 2000 Economic Development Council, who organized the regional recruiting effort. “Our local companies responded very favorably to this. They have open positions to fill and they know that military personnel often have the types of technical competencies and leadership skills that can be beneficial.”
The Economic Development Council has focused much of its efforts in the past year on helping businesses recruit a qualified workforce. Last year, it developed a regional recruiting DVD to help local companies attract key employees.
The companies attending with Virginia’s Region 2000 Partnership include: Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Inc. (AMTI), AREVA, The Babcock & Wilcox Company, Centra, Hurt & Proffitt, Inc., Southern Air, Inc., and the Lynchburg Police Department. Several other local organizations provided personnel and materials for the event including the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Employment Commission, and the Region 2000 Career Center.
The event, sponsored by the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, is held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to active-duty and recently separated military members, retired military members, reservists, and their families.
