Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership Receives an Excellence in Virginia Government Award

December 8, 2011

Virginia’s Region 2000 Partnership received an Excellence in Virginia Government Award (EVGA) today from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Since 2004, the EVGA has recognized outstanding Virginians who lead by example and who inspire others through their model of public service.

“The commonwealth often figures in the list of the best-governed states in the country,” said Niraj Verma, Director and Professor at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government & Public Affairs at VCU. “This is an impressive statistic. But it does not capture the stories of commitment and dedication that the EVGA celebrates. At a time when optimism is in short supply, these shining examples of public service can become the beacons that restore our faith in our future.”

The entire list of EVGA recipients include the following:

Public Private Partnership: Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership

Lifetime Achievement: The Honorable Susan Clarke Schaar, clerk, Senate of Virginia

Innovation in Government: Virginia Community College System, the Virginia Education Wizard

Community Enhancement: Better Housing Coalition, Lincoln Mews Project

Unsung Hero: Tedd Povar, associate director, Virginia Institute of Government

Hill-Robinson Expansion of Freedom: The Honorable Leroy R. Hassell Sr. (Awarded posthumously)

“This is a great honor,” said Region 2000 Economic Development Council Director Bryan David. “Each day, the Partnership organizations with guidance from the region’s business, local government, and higher education leadership become even more synchronized in a common vision of regional development. We continue to strive to make our region even stronger, despite recent economic challenges. In fact, the Great Recession, as it has been called, demonstrated both the success and timeliness of our Partnership programs.”

Virginia’s Region 2000 Partnership is a collaborative network of organizations with a unified vision to provide regional development leadership within the 2,000 square miles that surround Lynchburg, Virginia. The organization provides a single point of contact to the public and private sector for regional planning services, economic development, marketing, and workforce training.  Partner organizations include the Economic Development Council, the Local Government Council, the Technology Council, the Workforce Investment Board, the Young Professionals of Central Virginia and the newly opened Center for Advanced Engineering and Research.  Follow us on Twitter.
