The Workforce Investment Board

Download a Board Member Nomination Form

Organization

The Region 2000 Workforce Investment Area is made up of the cities of Bedford and Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell.  The Chief Local Elected Officials, who are comprised of an elected official from each of the above, are responsible for appointing members from the public and private sectors to the Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board.  The quality of the Board appointments is critical to ensuring that a well-respected and powerful local board is appointed.  The board is expected to reflect the local community.

Membership

The Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board is comprised of 48 members.  The Workforce Investment Act  requires that a majority of board members must be representatives from the private business sector.  Members representing businesses must be individuals who are owners, chief executive officers, chief operating officers or other individuals with optimum policy-making or hiring authority.  Private sector members are appointed from among individuals nominated by local business organizations and business trade associations.  Public sector members represent the required partners in the Career Center system.  Additionally, two representatives each are appointed from economic development, education, organized labor and community-based organizations.  The Board elects its own chair from among the private sector representatives.

Responsibilities

The Board is charged with implementing workforce investment activities throughout Region 2000.  Generally these include (1) increasing occupational skill attainment to improve the quality of the workforce, (2) reducing welfare dependency and (3) enhancing the productivity and competitiveness of the nation's economy.  The Board is responsible for grant administration, providing policy guidance and conducting oversight of all workforce activities.

Meetings

All meetings of the Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board are open to the general public.  Meetings are held quarterly, on the second Tuesday of the month at the Region 2000 Career Center.  The meetings are scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.  The meeting schedule for the calendar year 2008 is as follows:  February 12, May 13, August 12, and November 11.
